The UNC Charlotte College of Arts and Architecture (CoAA) advances a mission of the arts and design as engines of civic imagination and transformation. It is one of the only colleges in the US that combines the visual arts, performing arts, architecture and urban design. UNC Charlotte, Carolina’s “urban research opportunity,” collaborates with numerous community partners in one of the fastest growing cities in the US.

In a series of short presentations, Professors Sekou Cooke and Emily Makas and Dean Brook Muller will share information on graduate programs and scholarship opportunities at UNC Charlotte College of Arts and Architecture (CoAA). Graduate programs include the Master of Urban Design, MS Architecture in Critical Heritage, and MFA in Community-Centered Practices.

Speaker Bios:

Sekou Cooke is an architect, urban designer, researcher, and curator. Born in Jamaica and based in Charlotte, North Carolina, he is the Director of the Master of Urban Design program at UNC Charlotte, the 2021/2022 Nasir Jones HipHop Fellow at the Hutchins Center for African & African American Research at Harvard University, and a founding member of the Black Reconstruction Collective. Cooke is a leading advocate for the study and practice of Hip-Hop Architecture, which addresses the broad impacts of the racist history of architecture and urban planning, opening a pathway for practice, education, and scholarship that embraces architecture as a tool for shaping, reflecting, and understanding culture.

Dr. Emily G. Makaš is Associate Director and Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte School of Architecture. She has a Ph.D in the History of Architecture and Urbanism from Cornell University and a Masters in Historic Preservation from Columbia University. Her work explores memory, identity, and the built environment, including connections between historic sites, commemorative spaces, museums, and communities.

Brook Muller is Dean of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte College of Arts + Architecture and Professor in the School of Architecture. Dean Muller’s research and practice focus on the role of the arts in urban placemaking and the design implications of resilient, ecologically responsive urban water systems.
