Al-Khalifa Mini Camp: Sultans and Mamluks

Join us for the new “Sultans and Mamluks” camp, a fun and interactive way for your kids to explore Egypt’s Mamluk history and crafts in a fun and interactive way.
For five consecutive days, the Sultans and Mamluks Camp offers exciting adventures, including visits and tours to various historical sites such as the old markets of Cairo, the Citadel of Salah al-Din, al-Sultan Hasan Mosque, and al-Amir Taz’s Palace.

They’ll also enjoy a wide range of interactive games and workshops where they’ll learn traditional crafts like copper engraving, pottery, stucco carving, printing and collage, and more, providing a hands-on learning experience.

Dates: Daily from 20th July to 24th July 2025, 10 AM to 3 PM
Location: Heritage Workspace, al-Khalifa neighbourhood.
Ages Range:  7 to 13 years

Day One: Khalis Balis Malis.
Sunday, 20th July from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM

On this day, as we explore the markets and gates of Old Cairo, we will uncover the enchanting stories behind the famous saying ‘Khalis Malis Balis’. Our day will start with a visit to Wekalit Qaitbay in al-Mu’izz Street, followed by an interactive game that will fully involve each participant, helping us understand how the marketplaces were regulated. In the afternoon, each participant will make their currency pouches and paint on fabrics.

Day 2: Architecture of the Sultans
Monday, 21st July, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM

We’ll begin our journey with a visit to Qal’at Salah al-Din, where we’ll explore the Mosque of al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun. Participants will learn about the mosque’s history and architecture through specially designed puzzle cubes. They will then create souvenir cards inspired by the mosque’s architectural patterns, experiences, and what they have learned during the day using collage.

Day 3: The Blue Mosque
Tuesday, 22nd July from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM

We will embark on a journey to explore the Aq Sunqur Mosque’s history. We’ll join in assisting the conservation process of the mosque after the earthquake that struck Cairo in the past. After that, we will explore the world of Mamluk pottery art. Each participant will paint their pottery pieces

Day 4 – Treasure Hunt in al-Sultan Hasan:
Wednesday, 23rd July, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM
We will visit the famous al-Sultan Hasan school. Inside the school, we’ll try to solve a puzzle and look for the hidden treasure. After that, Participants will create their own copper engraving pieces.

Day 5 – Blazons and Mamluks
Thursday, 24th July from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM 
The camp ends with a visit to al-Amir Taz’s Palace, where children will learn about the Mamluk lifestyle. Through interactive games and illustrations, we will discover excavations, key ranks and positions that existed during the Mamluk era, and create their own stucco artworks.
