“They Have Clocks, We Have Time” is an expression we have heard a few times in Kanaky, where the cyclicity of the clocks may reinforce the colonial order, but its end is only… a matter of time. The idea that people living under colonial rule “have time” can seem counterintuitive at first glance. However, we can associate this with another idea: the perspective of colonialism as a temporal parenthesis, as Kanak President of New Caledonia’s Congress Roch Wamytan articulates.

Both of these ideas related to time may seem presumptuous in being brought forward by us, who are not experiencing colonial violence. Yet, there is something undoubtedly potent in refusing the temporal scale of colonialism as the “beginning” and “end” of stolen land.
