Ihky ya Tarkih

“Ihky ya Tarkih” (Speak, History), is a series of history workshops that explore the popular politics of communities largely marginalised in the writing of Egyptian histories. During this talk we will introduce the workshop’s methodology applied in the Nubian Island of Suhail, the city of Port Said and the neighbourhood of Ghuriyya. We will then present a few of the outputs of the workshop that answer our favorite question: “What do we do with all these emotionally rich and textured narratives once we have collected them?”

Ibrahim Al Mursi, Port Said 1974

It’s with this poetic verse by Ibrahim Al Mursi, poet (and mechanic from Port Said) that a call for the first applications to the History Workshops in Egypt “Ehky ya tarikh” (Tell, History) – were launched.

Since the initiation of the project in January 2015, two big workshops were held in communities outside of Cairo and two smaller ones in historical neighbourhoods in the capital city. Each workshop is designed based on a theme and a community. The first workshop in Aswan was based on excavating silenced histories of a region – Upper Egypt. These included insurgencies by fishermen and workers in the late 19th century to the forced migration of Nubian communities after building the High Dam in the 1950s. In March of 2015, a workshop was held in the medieval neighbourhood of Cairo – Al Ghuriyya – looking at the different ways subaltern histories of the neighbourhood could be read, centuries after most of its voices had elapsed. In the Summer of 2015 a workshop was held in Al Khalifa area in Cairo where a curriculum was developed and teachers trained on teaching shared Ottoman histories to Syrian and Egyptian students based on the same pedagogy of the workshop – field trips, field work, and exploring creative ways of re-telling histories. Finally the last workshop in the city of Port Said in January of 2016 explored how the history of the city that had become an emblem of regimes (the digging of the Suez canal in 1859, the ‘Suez War’ in 1956, the free trade zone in the age of Egyptian liberalism in the 1970s) could be re-explored and reinterpreted for the oppositional histories that lie in the popular experiences of the people who lived through the cities in these times. Thus, rather than an openly silenced history, we look at the histories silenced by the din of the larger battle.

Alia Mossallam

Disguised as an academic, Alia spends most of her time listening to people tell stories, and experimenting with ways to re-tell them. Over the last few years she has focused on stories behind moments of popular upheaval in Egypt’s social and geographic peripheries that are seldom told. Her PhD (and manuscript in the making) explores a popular history of Nasserist Egypt, through the stories told, and songs sung by the people behind the 1952 revolution. Namely the workers who built the Aswan High Dam, the Nubians displaced by it, and the members of the resistance in Port Said and Suez, in 1956 and 1967 respectively. Her interest in popular historiographic practices (how people document their histories through stories and personal archive) lead to her contribution to a number of plays including a project on the uprisings in Egypt between the Great War in 1914 and the great revolution of 1919, culminating in the play “Hawa al horeyya”. She is now engaged in a number of projects creating spaces for youth inside and outside of academic institutions in Egypt (and beyond) to search deeper into community histories and explore ways to re-tell them creatively. She has taught at the American University in Cairo, the Cairo Institute for Liberal Arts and Sciences, and holds a series of History Workshops with students, activists and artists in marginalised neighbourhoods in Cairo and remote Islands in Upper Egypt. She continues to look for stories, songs, and elusive archives in an attempt to recover a lost history of popular movements; and in hopes that one day, we may document our own.

Nayera Abdelrahman

Nayera chose to study political science for her passion to history. During university years and MA, her research was focused on education, civic engagement and youth. She also participated in founding Education Square, which aims to create a space for education practitioners in Egypt to share knowledge, experiences and discuss innovative solutions for the problems of education. Following her interest in different historical narratives other than the official ones, she got involved in the preparation of E7ky ya Tarikh to discuss social and political history of Upper Egypt and then Portsaid through examining different sources and re-narrating through artistic mediums. She will focus her research in the coming period on the popular history of displacement in Egypt.

Mohamed Yehia

With a BA in Clinical pharmacy since 2014, MOhammed’s interest in politics started since the Palestinian intifada in the year 2000, igniting his interest in the Palestinian cause in particular and the politics of the region in general. He started his public engagement after the 2011 revolution with the cultural initiative the ‘Lama’ (gathering) in Ismailia. After graduating from university he won the Lazurd civic leadership fellowship which started his work on researching civil society, followed by his current position as a co-fellow in the Cairo Institute for Liberal Arts and Sciences. Mohammed’s work in the History workshops is driven by his interest in social histories, where he has been responsible for sorting the archives on the wiki-page as well as co-facilitating a session on the social and economic history of the free trade zone in Port Said.

Ahmed El Gezy

Having graduated with a degree in Medicine in 2014, Ahmed is grateful for the revolution of 2011 which pushed him the direction of re-exploring his interests and contributing to a number of developmental and social and cultural initiatives like ‘El Lamma’ (gathering). Growing up in Port Said, a city whose buildings are drenched in heritage and whose streets tell stories that capture the hearts and minds of its populace, Ahmed developed a natural passion for history and historical research. Since his participation in ‘Ihky ya tarikh’ s Aswan workshop, he has started working as a researcher between the archives and the newspaper. Ahmed currently studies at the Cairo Institute for Liberal Arts and Sciences (CILAS), focusing on the humanities and with a particular interest in collective memory and its effect on communal identities. He is on the look-out for an opportunity to pursue these studies further through a degree in Middle East studies. Ahmed will also talk about his work on the workshop’s archives and the social and economic history of Port Said’s free trade zone.

Youmna El Khattam

Youmna has worked in a number of developmental initiatives and organizations from 2007-2014 until she decided to pursue her passion for story-telling, documentation and social histories. Youmna loves to travel and to be lost in public gardens. She is now working on a project researching her own family history, and other families’ histories through photographs and personal archives in an attempt to explore what they tell us of the social and cultural changes that Egypt has undergone over the last few decades. Youmna was responsible for documenting the workshops and contributing to the Port Said workshop with her own project on personal archives.

Speakers about outputs

Mostafa Mohie

Mostfa studied Engineering, but didn’t last long in his chosen discipline. He joined El Masry Al Youm in 2010 as a journalist in the video-documentation section of the website. After that he joined Mada Masr to produce more indepth and analytical journalism, while working as a researcher and fixer for a number of documentaries with “See-ra production company”. His latest work was on the documentary “The Troublemaker… Fathallah Mahrous”, telling the story of a leading calibur in the labour movement in Alexandria since the late 1940s. Mostafa is currently pursuing a masters’ degree at the American University in Cairo, has contributed to the History workshops in Aswan and Port Said, and the Women and Memory Forum’s workshops on “Feminist Histories”. Mostafa will read one of his pieces written for the Aswan workshop.

Nermin El Sherif

Nermin El Sherif graduated with a degree in architecture from the Fine Arts university in 2012. She is interested in the history of architecture and the history of cities and how they are represented through drawings and descriptions. She is also interested in forms of knowledge production, and the effect of the mode of production (language, images, maps) on the form of knowledge itself. She worked in the field of sustainable urban development for two years, and is currently preparing a Master’s thesis on the different ways that cities are depicted through their maps. Nermine teaches a course on “The Alternative Maps of Cairo” at the German University in Cairo, and will talk about her facilitation of the workshop on an alternative map of Port Said – A map of people’s stories and pictures that reflects their experiences of the city and its streets

إحكي يا تاريخ ورشة لإعادة إستكشاف تاريخ المدن والمجتماعات المصرية من خلال قصص الصراعات التاريخية واليومية التي خاضها أهالي المدينة أو المجتمع الذي نقوم بدراسته. سوف نقوم بعرض قصير عن منهجية الورشة كما أقيمت في جزيرة سهيل النوبية ومنطقة الغورية ومدينة بورسعيد. ثم نجيب على سؤالنا المفضل: "كيف نعيد طرح هذه السرديات المبحوثة لجمهور أوسع بكل ما تحتويه من قصص وأغاني ومشاعر متناقضة وتجارب إنسانية؟"

اكتب يا تاريخ…” هشام المرسي – بورسعيد 1974

تتضمن ورش "إحكي يا تاريخ" تدريب على مناهج بحثية مختلفة – بنقرا في الأرشيف والجرايد القديمة ونستكشف قيمة الأغاني والتاريخ الشفهي كمصادر للتاريخ الاجتماعي (والنسوي والعمالي). وبالإضافة لذلك نتطرق للمعمار والأفلام والصور وتفاصيل الأحداث التاريخية التي سقطت من كتب التاريخ.

وتتكون الورش من جزئين. الجزء الأول تدريب على منهجية بحث أو مصدر تاريخي معين بالإضافة الى شق عملي يعمل فيه الباحثون بالمصدر المتاح وينتهي اليوم بعرض ثقافي أو بزيارة متحف لإستكشاف سرديات تاريخية مختلفة، وفي الجزء التاني يعمل الباحثون في مجموعات مختلفة لبحث حدث تاريخي معين متعلق بالمحافظة/المجتمع الذي تتم فيه الورش – وستركز تدريبات هذا الجزء على كيفية اعادة سرد هذه الأحداث بطرق ابداعية.

الأنشطة

اقيمت الورشة الأولى من ٢٢-٣١ يناير 2015 في “بيت سهيل” في جزيرة سهيل النوبة وتم التركيز علي التاريخ السياسي والاجتماعي لصعيد مصر. اقيمت هذه الورشة بالشراكة مع الفرقة للفنون المسرحية وبدعم من المجلس العربي للعلوم الاجتماعية.

أقيمت الورشة الثانية من ٢١-٣٠ يناير 2016 في بورسعيد بالتعاون مع الجمعية المصرية لتنمية الثقافة الفرنسية ببورسعيد ومبادرة بورسعيد علي قديمه وبدعم من المجلس العربي للعلوم الاجتماعية.

وقد تم تدريس فصل دراسي بنفس المنهجية بمركز القاهرة للعلوم الإجتماعية والثقافية (CILAS) بالتركيز علي منطقة الغورية بين مارس ويونيو 2015.

وستقام ورشة بالأسكندرية في النصف الثاني من أبريل ٢٠١٦.

تتخفى عليا مسلم في العمل الأكاديمي لكي تبرر جمع القصص واعادة سردها لتروي تاريخ الثورات المصرية كما لم تُروى من قبل. عملت عليا على جمع قصص وتجارب الحراك الشعبي وراء ثورة ١٩٥٢ . ويتضمن هذا قصص بناة السد العالي والنوبيين الذين هُُجِروا أثناء بنائه والمقاومة الشعبية في بورسعيد سنة ١٩٥٦، والسويس سنة ١٩٦٧. وتحكى قصص الخمسينيات والسيتينات من خلال الحواديت و ايضا الأغاني والأمثال الشعبية التي حفظت لتلك المجتماعات تجاربهم الخاصة أثناء الأحداث التاريخيه ليتذكروا ما نساه التاريخ. إستخدم هذا البحث في إعداد رسالة الدكتوراه والعديد من الورش ويستخدم الآن في إعداد مسرحية عن الموضوع نفسه. كما قامت عليا ببحوث أخرى لقراءة لحظات منسية في تاريخ مصر الحديث كالإحتجاجات في بر مصر بين ١٩١٧ و ١٩١٩ والحركة الأناركية في الإسكندرية في آواخر القرن ال١٩ من خلال الأغاني والأعمال المسرحية والمنشورات والمطبوعات في تلك اللحظات. وتعمل دائماً على إستكشاف طرق مبتكرة لطرح تلك السرديات التاريخية البديلة والمنسية لأوسع دوائر إجتماعية ممكنة من خلال الكتابة والمسرح والورش. وتعمل عليا كمدرس مساعد في الجامعة الأمريكية وفي مركز القاهرة للعلوم الإجتماعية والثقافية (CILAS) إلى جانب اعدادهالورش عمل تبحث التاريخ الشفهي للحظات ثورية في صعيد مصر وخط القنال وقريباً بالإسكندرية.

نيرة عبدالرحمن

اختارت نيرة ان تدرس العلوم السياسية لشغفها بالتاريخ وطريقة تدريسه فى البكالوريا الفرنسية. ركزت ابحاثها فى سنوات الجامعة ثم فى الماجيستير على التعليم، العمل الأهلى والمساحات البديلة التى يخلقها الشباب فى حياتهم اليومية. كما شاركت فى تأسيس مبادرة “ميدان التعليم” التى تهدف الى خلق مساحة للعاملين والمهتمين بالتعليم لمشاركة المعارف والخبرات ومناقشة حلول مبتكرة لمشاكل التعليم. ظل اهتمامها بالتاريخ موجود خاصة بان يتم توثيق سردياته المختلفة، السرديات غير الموجودة فى كتب التاريخ لكن فى حكايات من عاشوا تلك الأحداث، فى اغانيهم وفى الأرشيف. لذلك تشارك فى اعداد هذه الورشة لبحث التاريخ الإجتماعى والسياسى لصعيد مصر من خلال المصادر المختلفة واعادة سردها. ستركز ابحاثها في الفترة القادمة علي التاريخ الشعبي للتهجير في مصر.

محمد يحيي

حاصل علي بكالوريوس الصيدلية الاكلينكية من جامعة قناة السويس عام 2014 . بدأ اهتمامه بالتاريخ منذ الصغر بسبب احداث الانتفاضة الفلسطنية الثانية و التى جعلته مهتما بشكل اساسي بتاريخ فلسطين و الشرق الاوسط بشكل عام. بدأ محمد نشاطه فى العمل العام بعد الثورة من خلال مجموعات سياسية و ثقافية. كان احد مؤسسي فريق ” اللمة ” بالاسماعلية و هى مبادرة كانت تهدف الى خلق نخب ثقافية جديدة بعد الثورة. بعد تخرجه من كلية الصيدلة حصل علي زمالة لازورد للقيادة المجتمعية و التى قادته للعمل كباحث فى مجال المجتمع المدنى . يعمل الآن كمساعد زميل فى معهد القاهرة للاداب و العلوم الحرة بالغورية فى مجال العلوم الانسانية بالاضافة الي عمله كمساعد باحث فى مركز البحوث الاجتماعية بالجامعة الامريكية. ينصب اهتمامه بشكل اساسي علي التاريخ الاجتماعى و الرواية الشعبية اثناء الحروب خاصة فى منطقة القناة هذا بلاضافة الي اهتمامه الاصلي بتاريخ القضية الفلسطنية و الصراع العربي الاسرائيلي.

أحمد الجيزي

تخرج من كلية الطب جامعة قناة السويس عام 2014 . يمتن للثورة التي دفعته لاعادة اكتشاف ذاته و المساهمة في تغيير مجتمعه للافضل من خلال نشاطه في مبادرات معرفية تهدف لتكوين نخب ثقافية ك ” اللمة ” و العمل بكيانات آخرى خيرية و تنموية . في بورسعيد حيث مبان بطراز معماري خاص و شوارع تحكي تاريخا يهيمن على ذاكرة سكانها و يشكل هويتهم نشأ أحمد شغوفا بالتاريخ محبا لقراءته و مناقشته .منحته ” احكي يا تاريخ ” والتي شارك في ورشتها الاولى في أسوان فرصة العمل لأول مرة كباحث بين الارشيفات و الوثائق و الجرائد. يدرس حاليا بمعهد القاهرة للدراسات الحرة و العلوم ( سيلاس ). يركز في دراسته على العلوم الانسانية و الاجتماعية حيث يهتم بالأساس بالذاكرة التاريخية للشعوب وكيفية تشكلها بجانب قضايا الهوية والتعددية الاثنية والثقافية ويسعى للحصول على فرصة للدراسة و البحث في مجال الدراسات الشرق الأوسطية.

يمنى الختام

عملت في الكثير من المبادرات و المنظمات التنموية منذ عام 2007 حتى عام 2014 عندما قررت ان تبحث حول شغفها بالحكي و التوثيق و التاريخ الشفهي و الأرشيف. تحب السفر و التيه في الحدائق العامة. تعمل الآن على البحث في تاريخ عائلتها و عائلات أخريين عن ماهية الهوية في ظل التغييرات التى مرت بها مصر. مسؤولة عن توثيق ورشة احكي يا تاريخ في النوبة و بورسعيد و ساهمت في ورشة بورسعيد بتقديم مشروعها عن الأرشيف الشخصي.

نرمين الشريف

درست نرمين التصميم المعماري في كلية الفنون الجميلة و تخرجت منها في 2012. مهتمة بتاريخ العمارة و المدن و تمثيلها عبر الرسم و الوصف. كما تهتم بآليات إنتاج المعرفة و أثر الوسيط(الكلمة، الصورة، الرسم..) عليها. عملت في مجال التنمية العمرانية المستدامة لعامين.الآن، بجانب عملها في المجال الأكاديمي تقوم بتحضير رسالة ماجيستير عن الصور المختلفة للمدينة عن طريق خرائطها. قامت نرمين بإدارة ورشة صناعة الخرائط الإجتماعية (لتعكس الذكريات والتجارب عبر الأزمنة في شوارع وميادين المدينة) في نهاية الورشة لتصمم مع المشاركين بالورشة "خريطة حكاوي وصور أهالي بورسعيد"

مصطفى محيي

درس الهندسة لكنه لم يستمر طويلا في العمل بمجال تخصصه. التحق بالعمل الصحفي بداية من سنة ٢٠١٠ بانضمامه إلى المصري اليوم، وهناك عمل بالموقع الإلكتروني وقسم الفيديو للصحيفة. لاحقا انضم بموقع "مدى مصر" لإنتاج محتوى صحفي أكثر عمقا وتحليلا. وعمل كباحث ومُعد بعدد من الأفلام الوثائقية من خلال شركة سيرة لإنتاج الأفلام، من بينها فيلم "المشاغب.. فتح الله محروس" الذي يحكي قصة أحد قيادات الحركة العمالية واليسارية في الإس كندرية من أواخر الأربعينيات وحتى الآن. إلتحق مؤخرا ببرنامج الماجستير بقسم الأنثروبولوجي بالجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة، وشارك كمتحدث في ورشة "احكي ياتاريخ" في بورسعيد، وورشة "مناهج البحث في التاريخ الشفهي من منظور النوع الاجتماعي".
