Failed Architecture’s René Boer and Michiel van Iersel
Our heritage has been hijacked by preservationists, city marketeers and real estate developers. All around the world, from Amsterdam to Mecca and Macao, the care of our collective patrimony has been largely privatised, left to the market and in the hands of a happy few. Ever-growing, both in scale and scope, the heritage industry now controls a vast part of the built environment. Rem Koolhaas has estimated that around 12 percent of the planet now falls under various regimes of preservation. UNESCO’s World Heritage List is growing faster than the number of H&M shops and Starbucks stores. At the same time, because of a lack of commercial interest many historically significant buildings are left to decay.
It’s time to take back our monuments and ruins, old and new. Taking inspiration from architectural and artistic experiments, and using ‘hacking’ as a metaphor for a more activist approach, this talk explores various tactics to re-appropriate historic buildings and areas. From spontaneous interventions in the hidden back alleys of Amsterdam’s historic inner city to the public-private preservation coalition on the island of Zanzibar, this overview shows that small-scale initiatives can have a big impact on how we perceive and engage with our heritage. From passive consumers of sanitized and scripted spaces, we can all become active participants in the creation of a public patrimony.
About Failed Architecture
Failed Architecture aims to open up new perspectives on urban failure, and seeks to understand architecture – beyond mainstream architectural discourse – as a product of the political, economic and social conditions of its time. Over the last 5 years, Failed Architecture has launched a well-known website, set up various research projects and organized a series of traveling workshops around the world. In November 2016, Failed Architecture resides in Cairo for among others a workshop on Al-Azhar University’s modernist Nasr City campus.
About the Lecturers:
-Michiel van Iersel (1978) is an Amsterdam based urbanist and curator. He is co-founder of Non-fiction and the Failed Architecture research foundation. In recent years he has curated exhibitions and festivals and worked on research projects and publications at the intersection of the arts, urban issues, heritage and technology. He was co-author of a publication for the World Heritage Centre in Paris. In 2013 he was appointed as the first guest curator of the World Heritage Podium in Amsterdam, for which he wrote the World Heritage Now pamphlet with Rafe Copeland. In 2016 he acted as Curator of the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) and was appointed as lecturer at the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam.
-René Boer (1986) works as an urban and architectural researcher, writer and activist in Amsterdam, is managing editor at the research studio Failed Architecture and part of the Non-fiction team. He is currently working on the un/smooth city research project, an installation at Het Nieuwe Institute in Rotterdam and a documentary on Amsterdam’s A10 ring road. He was critic-in-residence at the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam 2016 and a visiting fellow at the Cairo Institute for Liberal Arts and Sciences, where he taught courses on architecture, cities and heritage.

تم الاستيلاء على تراثنا من قبل مختصي الحفظ، ومسوقي المدينة، ومطوري العقارات. ففي جميع أنحاء العالم-من أمستردام إلى مكة المكرمة وماكاو-تمت خصخصة رعاية الميراث الجماعي على نطاق واسع، ومن ثم تسليمه إلى السوق ليصبح في أيدي القلة المحظوظة. والآن تسيطر صناعة التراث المتنامية –سواء في المقياس أو المجال-على جزء كبير من البيئة المبنية. ويقدر ريم كولهاس أن حوالي 12% من الكوكب يقع الآن تحت سيطرة أنظمة الحفظ المختلفة. فقائمة اليونسكو للتراث العالمي تنمو أسرع من عدد المحلات التجارية H & M ومتاجر ستاربكس. وفي الوقت نفسه، نجد أن العديد من المباني التاريخية ذات القيمة تركت للتدهور نظرا لعدم وجود مصلحة تجارية في حفظها.
وقد حان الوقت لاستعادة مبانينا التراثية والأطلال سواء القديم منها أو الجديد. والاستلهام من التجارب المعمارية والفنية، واستخدام 'القرصنة' مجازا لاتباع منهج ناشط أكثر، ففي هذا الطرح نستكشف التكتيكات المختلفة لإعادة المباني والمساحات التاريخية إلى صورة ملائمة. انطلاقا من التدخلات العفوية في الأزقة المتخفية بقلب المدينة التاريخية بأمستردام وصولا إلى اتحاد قطاعي الحفاظ العام والخاص في جزيرة زنجبار، توضح لنا هذه النظرة العامة كيف يمكن للمبادرات الصغيرة أن تؤثر تأثيرا كبيرا على نظرتنا وتفاعلنا مع تراثنا. وعليه فيمكن للمستخدمين السلبيين للمساحات القائمة الجميلة أن يتحولوا إلى مشاركين فاعلين في إنشاء الميراث العام.
عن العمارة الفاشلة
وتهدف "العمارة الفاشلة" إلى فتح آفاق جديدة على الفشل الحضري، وتسعى إلى فهم العمارة-أبعد من الخطاب المعماري السائد-كمنتج للظروف السياسية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية لوقت تكونها. على مدى الخمس سنوات الماضية، أطلقت "فشل العمارة" موقعا إلكترونيا معروفا، يعمل على إنشاء مشروعات بحثية مختلفة، وتنظيم سلسلة من ورش العمل تجوب العالم. وفي نوفمبر 2016، تتواجد "العمارة الفاشلة" في القاهرة لأهداف منها ورشة عمل تدرس حداثة حرم جامعة الأزهر بمدينة نصر.
