Khalifa-Exchange

DESCRIPTION

A quid pro quo barter program for knowledge exchange between the artisans and trained technicians of al-Khalifa and professionals and students in the fields of architecture, conservation and design. Our three month pilot programme targets carpentry and design in wood. Technicians exchange their knowledge of carpentry, paints and stains and joinery with architects and designers in return for learning how to draw, photograph and market their designs. This is in addition to training sessions with senior professionals and craftsmen to raise the capacity of both groups and a follow up program of marketing and dissemination.

ACTIVITIES (bi-weekly sessions)

Month One | Design

1. Meetings to discover skills and modalities of exchange.
2. Exchange sessions: Design an object – learn to produce drawings from concepts to shop drawings.
3. Training sessions: Design methods – styles – current trends in furniture design.

Month Two | Manufacture

1. Exchange session: Calculate quantities and cost – purchase material – cutting and assembly – finishes
2. Training sessions: Types of wood – grades of wood – types of finishes.

Month Three | Marketing

1. Exchange session: basics of photography, photoshop and video-making .
2. Training sessions: Marketing through social networks.
