Spend the Day in Khalifa 8

Athar Lina Initiative is celebrating the heritage of al-Khalifa neighbourhood for the eighth year in a row, through its tourism promotion event “Spend the Day in Khalifa” organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and Cairo Governorate. The events will take place from the 24th to the 27th of March, 2021.

For the third year in a row, the event is organized under the umbrella of Athar Lina Heritage Design Thinking School, funded by Drosos Foundation, and under the supervision of the Ministry of Social Solidarity. It builds on the experience of Megawra | Built Environment Collective (BEC) working with the heritage of al-Khalifa since 2012 through Athar Lina Initiative, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

This year, the events highlight the traditional craftsmanship of al-Khalifa, specifically the recently launched Athar Lina Product Line which is considered one of the most important outputs of Athar Lina Heritage Design Thinking School. The products are designed by school participants, Athar Lina team members, designers, and craftspeople from inside and outside al-khalifa. 

This year, Athar Lina is happy to open another historical building in the area, in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, Sabil Umm ‘Abbas, to host the events of Spend the Day in al-Khalifa. 

In this year’s event, entrance will be monitored according to social distancing guidelines. We expect all our guests to adhere to standard precautionary measures and wear protective masks.

The program activities will take place in the area of al-Khalifa as follows:

Day 1 | March 24th

– Conservation and Management Plan for Al-Khalifa Street Area |Online Lecture by Ahmed Mansour

This lecture is the first part of the lecture series that is a follow-up to the Citizen Participation in Historic Cairo Project Closing Event that was held at the end of last year.
