Stories of the city through literature and cinema
How do we tell the story of the city? And how do we, in the telling, understand it and resolve the issue of attachment to history vs. the necessity of change?
Writer Alaa Khaled, visual artist Salwa Rashad and filmmaker Mae Abdel Sater attempt to answer this question by discussing their cities, Alexandria and Beirut. Alaa and Salwa do so through AMKENAH, a periodical on the culture of place that they have been publishing since 1999 and Mae through her short documentary MILK TEA that tells the story of Beirut as seen through the eyes of her father and his globetrotting family. The discussion is moderated by Ahmed Mansour, founding member of Heliopolis Heritage and principal of Mansour-Korachy Architects.

About MILK TEA
This documentary pays tribute to Beirut’s reminiscence. By taking a trip down my family’s memory, guided by my father, who has always been the eyes I see this city with. My story narrates the tales of three generations; immigration to Brazil, the bitterness of the civil war and nowadays. These are the stories that embroidered my memory of Beirut.
Mae Abdel Sater is a Beirut based Visual artist and Documentary maker. Majoring in Theatrical Cinematographic and Audiovisual Studies, This IESAV- USJ graduate manifests “Beirut” and its hidden testimonies as the main inspiration to her canvas.

Amkenah is an occasional periodical that concerns itself with the culture of place edited by writer Alaa Khaled and photographer and visual artist Salwa Rashad.

حكايات المدينة من خلال السينما والأدب
كيف نحكي حكاية المدينة؟ وهل يمكننا – من خلال هذا الحكي – ان نفك الاشتباك بين الارتباط بتاريخها والاعتراف بحتمية التغيير؟
يحاول الأديب علاء خالد والفنانة التشكيلية سلوى رشاد والمخرجة ميّ عبد الساتر الإجابة عن هذه الأسئلة فيما يخص مدينتي الأسكندرية وبيروت. علاء وسلوى من خلال مجلة أمكنة وهي دورية تعنى بثقافة المكان وميَ من خلال فيلمها التوثيقي شاي باللبن الذي يحكي حكاية بيروت وذكريات عائلتها كثيرة التنقل كما يرويها والدها.

عن فيلم شاي باللبن
هذا الفيلم الوثائقي هو محاولة استرجاع ذاكرة بيروت عبر الغوص في ذاكرة عائلتي الصغيرة، الممثلة بوالدي. روايتي عن بيروت هي ثلاث روايات مدمجة، من أيام المهاجر الاول إلى البرازيل مروراً بمرارة الحرب الأهلية وحتى يومنا هذا. تلك الروايات هي ذاكرتي التي هي جزء من توثيق ذاكرة هذه المدينة
مي عبد الساتر فنانة بصرية ومخرجة أفلام وثائقية مقيمة في بيروت. خريجة الجامعة اليسوعية في الدراسات المسرحية والسينمائية، غالباً ما تشكّل بيروت وخباياها أسس إلهامها الفني. "شاي باللبن" هو الفيلم الوثائقي الأول لمي، الذي تأخذ فيه المخرجة المشاهدين في رحلة حنين في ذاكرة بيروت عبر عدستها السياسية والفنية

مجلة أمكنة: مجلة مستقلة تعنى بثقافة المكان. صدرت بالإسكندرية سبتمبر عام 1999، وصدر منها حتى الآن إحدى عشر عددا ويقوم على تحريرها علاء خالد وسلوى رشاد
