Training Course: Integrated Solutions for Groundwater Problems in Historic Settings

This training course lies within the framework of the Athar Lina Groundwater Research Project (funded by the Cultural Emergency Response), and the Athar Lina Heritage and Climate Project – Erth (funded by the British Council’s Cultural Protection Fund) and is organised by Athar Lina Initiative (Megawra) in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

The course’s duration is 16 hours over a period of two weeks, twice weekly (Sunday and Wednesday) starting 9:00 am to 1:30 pm from the 14th to 25th of June 2023. Interested applicants who are students and graduates of archaeology and engineering are encouraged to apply. First priority will be given to employees of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

The course will mainly address the causes and effects of groundwater in historical sites, steps of documentation and rapid assessment on the condition of historic buildings, solutions to groundwater problems (ventilation, desalination, mechanical and chemical interruption, groundwater reduction) and finally integrated solutions for the extraction and reuse of groundwater.

The course will be held in al-Khalifa neighbourhood in Historic Cairo.

About the instructors:

Muhammed Al Essawy is a consultant engineer, holding a BSc in Civil Engineering from Alexandria University and a MSc and a PhD in Civil Engineering from Cairo University.

Abeer Fouad is a lecturer at the Department of Conservation and Head Manager of the Research and Conservation Center at the Faculty of Archaeology, Fayoum University. She holds a BSc in Archaeology, with a specialization in restoration and a PhD and MA in Conservation and Restoration from the Faculty of Archaeology, Cairo University.

May al-Ibrashy is an Egyptian architect, chair of Megawra – BEC, founder of Megawra Built Environment and Head of Athar Lina initiative. Al-Ibrashy holds a BSc in Architectural Engineering from Ain Shams University, an MA in History of Islamic Art and Architecture and a PhD in Archaeology from the University of London.

Aliaa El Dardiry is an Egyptian architect working in Megawra –BE, She holds a BSc in Architectural Engineering from Ain Shams University and is currently pursuing a masters degree in Digital Heritage at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport,
