Webinar: Megawra Papers No.4: Glossary of the Street
“Glossary of the Street” embraces the face that the city changes and the street is continuously transforming. Therefore, it is not possible to depend on singular definitions, assumptions, and a stagnant set of rules that regulate it. It also embraces the need to revisit the knowledge and experience that Megawra has built in al-Khalifa and Historic Cairo, in order to better address its work on the streets and the neighborhood in the future. The goal of this project was to derive the definitions from living, belonging, dealing with, and being part of the streets. Through descriptions based on use, time, labor, functionality, and so on, the research was able to come up with other definitions that will produce a differentiated understanding of the street.
In this Webinar, Merve Bedir and Ahmed Tarek will be discussing the workshops, development and final outcomes of their research. The discussion will be moderated by Omar El Kousy. Glossary of the Street is an extension of Megawra’s latest publication series, Megawra Papers and this event is part of Megawra’s 10th anniversary celebrations!
Ahmed Tarek alAhwal works as a research assistant and PhD candidate at the University of Freiburg, in the field of sustainable planning. His past experience is in the field of urban management, specifically urban water management, and urban mobility. Ahmed worked as an urban researcher, and urban program coordinator in Megawra-Built environment collective, he was also a co-founder and project coordinator at Tabdeel, the center for bicycle urbanism. He holds a Msc. of Urban management and development from the Institute of Housing and urban development Studies (IHS), Rotterdam, and a BSc. in Architecture from Cairo University.
Aformal Academy and Land and Civilization Compositions
Merve Bedir is an architect based in Hong Kong/Shenzhen. Her work focuses on the relationship between urban transformation and public space, connecting architectural technologies, law, and urban politics. She continues to work further on the infrastructures of hospitality and mobility. Merve Bedir is an adjunct assistant professor in Hong Kong University Department of Architecture, Division of Landscape Architecture, and a founding partner of Land and Civilization Compositions. She is also a co-founder of Aformal Academy (focused on experimental pedagogies in Pearl River Delta region), a founding member of Mutfak مطبخ Workshop (focused on migration and Kitchen as cultural space in Gaziantep), and a founding member of Center for Spatial Justice in Istanbul. Merve Bedir holds a Ph.D. from Delft University of Technology, and a BArch from Middle East Technical University in Ankara.
In 2020, and in an effort to structure the process of knowledge sharing and exchange, Megawra-BEC started producing its occasional series, Megawra Papers. Through this series of publications, which are shared online and through a limited print, Megawra-BEC shares the outputs of its place-based applied research in Cairo. It is envisioned that researchers and practitioners will also be commissioned to write for this series on topics related to the built environment. Through Megawra Papers, Megawra-BEC has published the results of its conservation and management study of al-Khalifa Street area, a guide to legal parameters for interventions in the built environment of Historic Cairo, and a study of the specifics of the street elements of al-Khalifa Street.
اوراق مجاورة رقم ٤: معجم الشارع
يتبنى "معجم الشارع" حقيقة أن المدينة تتغير والشوارع تتحول، ولذلك لا يمكن الاعتماد على تعريفات فردية وافتراضات ومجموعة ثابتة من القواعد التي تنظمهما. كما يؤمن المعجم بالحاجة إلى مراجعة المعرفة والخبرة التي بنتها مجاورة في الخليفة والقاهرة التاريخية، من أجل معالجة عملها بشكل أفضل في الشوارع والحي في المستقبل.
هدف المشروع هو اشتقاق التعريفات من العيش والانتماء والتعامل كجزء من الشوارع. من خلال التعريفات القائمة على الاستخدام والوقت والعمل والنفع وما إلى ذلك، فإن الهدف هو التوصل إلى تعريفات أخرى من شأنها أن تنتج فهمًا مختلفًا للشارع.
في هذه الندوة الإلكترونية، سيقوم ميرف بدير و احمد طارق بمشاركة نتائج الورش وتطوير والبحث ككل. و سيدير النقاش عمر القوصي.
"معجم الشارع" هو مشروع ممتد من أجدد سلسة من المطبوعات بعنوان أوراق مجاورة، و هذه الندوة جز من احتفاليات الذكرى العاشرة لمجاورة.

يعمل أحمد طارق الأحول كمساعد باحث وطالب دكتوراه في جامعة فرايبورغ في مجال التخطيط المستدام ولديه خبرات سابقة في مجال إدارة المدن ، تحديداً إدارة المياه في المناطق الحضرية وأساليب التنقل المستادمة. عمل أحمد سابقاً كباحث في مجال العمران، ومنسق برامج في مجاورة|جمعية الفكر العمراني ، وكان أيضًا عضواً مؤسسًا ومنسقًا لمشروع “تبديل” وهو مشروع لدعم التنقل بالدراجات في المدن .حصل أحمد على شهادة الماجستير في الإدارة الحضرية والتنمية من معهد دراسات الإسكان والتنمية الحضرية من جامعة روتردام وعلى البكالوريوس في الهندسة المعمارية من جامعة القاهرة.
آفورمال أكاديمي ومؤسسة تركيبات الأرض والحضارة
ميرف بدير هي مهندسة معمارية مقيمة في هونغ كونغ/شينزين. يركز عملها على العلاقة بين التحول الحضري والفراغ العام، مع الربط بين التكنولوجيا المعمارية والقانون والسياسة الحضرية. كما تواصل العمل بشكل أكبر على البنى التحتية للضيافة والتنقل. ميرف بدير أستاذ مساعد في قسم الهندسة المعمارية بجامعة هونغ كونغ، قسم تنسيق المواقع، وشريك مؤسس في مؤسسة تركيبات الأرض والحضارة. وهي أيضًا أحد مؤسسي آفورمال أكاديمي (التي تركز على طرق التدريس التجريبية في منطقة دلتا نهر اللؤلؤ)، وعضو مؤسس في ورشة مطبخ (التي تركز على الهجرة والمطبخ كمساحة ثقافية في مدينة غازي عنتاب)، وعضو مؤسس لمركز العدالة الفراغية في اسطنبول. ميرف بدير حاصلة على درجة الدكتوراه من جامعة دلفت للتكنولوجيا، وبكالوريوس من جامعة الشرق الأوسط التقنية في أنقرة.
في عام 2020، وفي محاولة لهيكلة عمليات مشاركة وتبادل المعرفة، بدأت جمعية الفكر العمراني–مجاورة في إنتاج سلسلة المطبوعات غير الدورية: أوراق مجاورة. تساهم أوراق مجاورة في نشر مخرجات الأبحاث التطبيقية لجمعية الفكر العمراني–مجاورة في القاهرة، وهي متاحة للتنزيل عبر الإنترنت، ومن خلال عدد محدود من الطبعات. من المخطط أن تضم السلسلة نتاج أبحاث الباحثين والممارسين أيضًا حول الموضوعات المتعلقة بالبيئة المبنية. قامت جمعية الفكر العمراني-مجاورة من خلال أوراق مجاورة بنشر نتائج دراستها الخاصة بخطة الحفاظ والإدارة لمنطقة شارع الخليفة، ومعايير التصميم في القاهرة التاريخية للمباني واستخدامات الأراضي والمناطق المفتوحة، ودراسة خصائص عناصر شارع الخليفة.
