Working with Stucco: A craft and design workshop

Stucco, or carved gypsum, is a versatile material that lends itself to a variety of design approaches. The carved arches, cornices, inscription friezes of Egypt’s Islamic architecture are testament to the range of possibilities offered by ٍstucco.
In the context of exploring modalities of designing and making contemporary heritage-inspired products, Athar Lina Heritage Design Thinking School Project (ALHDTS) announces its new workshop for professionals.
During this 6-day beginners’ workshop, participants will be taught the basics of modelling with stucco. Using the exquisitely beautiful and unexpectedly abstract Samarra style stucco of Ibn Tulun Mosque as inspiration, they will then investigate the potential for designing contemporary design inspired by its patterns and shapes.
Exceptional designs could be developed further by ALHDTS and added to its product line, in partnership with designers.
This hands-on workshop introduces fresh graduates and young professionals to the following:
– Traditional and modern techniques of molding and carving stucco.
– Introduction to the history of stucco in the Islamic world.
– Basics of contemporary design approaches to stucco applied to a design project.
This workshop is part of the second season of ALHDTS project, run by Built Environment Collective, funded by Drosos Foundation, in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, under the supervision of the Ministry of Social Solidarity.

This is a 36-hour workshop, divided as following:
Friday the 29th of October – 01:00 pm to 06:00 pm.
Saturday the 30th of October – 10:00 am to 05:00 pm
Friday the 5th of November- 01:00 pm to 06:00 pm.
Saturday the 6th of November- 10:00 am to 05:00 pm
Friday the 12nd of November- 01:00 pm to 06:00 pm.
Saturday the 13rd of November- 10:00 am to 05:00 pm

Eligibility:
12 participants with a background in design and/or crafts. The workshop targets students and young professionals in the fields of design, art and architecture. .
Manual and/or digital drawing skills and photography are considered a plus.
Registration fees: 1200 EGP
Scholarship Availability: 2 half scholarships
