Workshop: Shared Streets formation in Al-Khalifa

Al-Khalifa’s historic urban fabric was designed according to a human scale that encourages interaction in the street as an open space. It supports walking as a mode of transportation. However, the introduction of vehicles as well as changes to street widths have harmed the most vulnerable users (pedestrians – bicycle users) and decreased their power, safety and comfort. It has also gradually forced users to abandon those vulnerable modes thus harming life in the street as a public space and increasing congestion.

The workshop uses shared streets strategies for observation and intervention to balance between street users, thus improving safety and quality of life for street users. A conceptual toolkit of realistic implementable interventions will be developed with the local community. These proposals provide solutions for problems that face vulnerable users and rehabilitate the built environment. While Megawra’s team will provide the workshop participants with data from Al-Khalifa relevant to the activities, as well as related theory and examples.

The 5-day workshop is organized by the Built Environment Collective-Megawra from the 29th of August to the 2nd of September.
Deadline for registration is the 21st of August 2018.
Workshop fees are LE 200 for students and LE 300 for graduates.
